Gambeson is a very useful under-armour wear, that was usually used by ancient knights either as a shock resistant underwear, or a simple light armour. It is usually made of many layers of fabric, crammed with wool, horsehair or tow. Usage of classic Gambeson depends on type of battle – poor infantry used it as basic armour, heavy armoured knights were wearing it under armour. In ancient times, padded jackets were even used to protect horses from huge amounts of archer's arrows.
